Montgomery, Ala.- Montgomery Public Schools (MPS) Superintendent Dr. Melvin J. Brown is speaking out against the proposed DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) bill in Alabama. SB129 states, “This bill would prohibit certain public entities, including state agencies, local boards of education, and public institutions of higher education, from maintaining a diversity, equity, and inclusion office or department or sponsoring any diversity, equity, and inclusion program or program that advocates for a divisive concept.” Dr. Brown believes that every student across Alabama deserves access to quality education that is reflective and celebrates diversity and inclusion in today’s society. Given the historical context of our country’s experiences, we must be honest about who we have been, who we are, and who we want to be. Everyone deserves to see that he or she is reflected in and celebrated by our society.
“Diversity and inclusion provides an educational experience that allows students to explore a range of perspectives and cultures worldwide. We must create a culture of belonging for every student, no matter their background, preferences, or socioeconomic status. As educators, it is our job to ensure we cultivate environments that allow students to feel safe and prepare them for an evolving world. Introducing a bill that limits this interaction is detrimental to the success of our students’ futures,” stated Dr. Brown.
Dr. Brown and other educators around the state of Alabama are urging policymakers to reconsider pushing this bill forward and focus on initiatives that support the quality of education for all students.
