Montgomery Public Schools is moving forward with a bold plan to expand opportunities for students and families across the district. Superintendent Dr. Zickeyous Byrd recently announced a set of key initiatives that will guide MPS through 2026, focusing on academic excellence, college and career readiness, and workforce development.

“This plan is about preparing our students for life after graduation,” Dr. Byrd said. “Whether that path leads to college, career, service, or leadership, we are committed to creating opportunity for every child.”

What Families Can Expect

MPS will expand access to high-quality programs and learning options across the district:

  • More Magnet School Options:
Carver Elementary and Arts Magnet School and Dalraida Elementary School will transition to full magnet schools, expanding access to rigorous academic programs.

  • Expanded Opportunities at Park Crossing High School:
Park Crossing will operate under a two-schools, one-campus model, adding a new magnet program in Building F alongside its International Baccalaureate program.

  • International Baccalaureate Expansion:
Wilson and Blount Elementary Schools are applying for IB designation, creating the opportunity for a seamless IB pathway from elementary through high school.

  • Workforce Development Center:
MPS will repurpose Trenholm Community College’s Westside Campus into a Workforce Development Center offering early college, dual enrollment, and career training in high-demand fields such as healthcare, technology, manufacturing, logistics, and skilled trades.

  • Signature Academies at Every School:
Beginning in 2026, all traditional MPS schools will become academic-themed Signature Academies aligned with college and career pathways.

  • More Flexible Learning Options:
MPS will expand its virtual school offerings and transition high schools to a traditional semester schedule to better align with colleges and universities.

  • Expanded Student Activities:
The district will continue to enhance extracurricular and athletic opportunities, including launching a new football program at Brewbaker Technology Magnet High School.

Looking Ahead

Together, these initiatives represent a major reimagining of the Montgomery Public Schools experience, designed to better meet the evolving needs of students and families while supporting the future of our community.

Superintendent Dr. Zickeyous Byrd emphasized that strong alignment and partnership at every level are essential to bringing these plans to life. He noted the importance of continued support from the Board of Education and collaboration with city, county, and community leaders to ensure long-term success.

Montgomery County Board of Education President Pamela Portis shared her support, highlighting the plan as a clear roadmap for strengthening MPS, expanding academic and career pathways, and ensuring every student has the opportunity to thrive.
