Subject: Bookbag Policy Update
Dear Brewbaker Middle School Families,
After careful consideration, I have decided that Brewbaker Middle School will not be making any changes to the current bookbag policy for the 2026–2027 school year.
While the idea was intended to support student safety and improve our morning arrival process, I recognize that the timing of this change was not fair to families who have already purchased school supplies. Therefore, we will continue to follow the current Montgomery Public Schools bookbag policy this school year.
Thank you for your understanding, flexibility, and continued support. I look forward to a great school year as we work together to ensure a safe and successful learning environment for all students.
Sincerely,
Victor Davis
Principal
Brewbaker Middle School
Dear Brewbaker Middle School Families,
As we prepare for another successful school year, we want to share an important update regarding student bookbags. Our goal is simple: to create a safe, secure, and academically focused learning environment where every student can begin the school day ready to learn.
To help us accomplish this, we are encouraging students to use Trapper Keeper-style notebooks or organizational binders instead of traditional bookbags. These organizers provide enough space to carry five folders, a calculator, writing supplies, and a Yondr pouch while keeping students organized for class.
This recommendation supports several important priorities:
Faster morning entry: Smaller organizational binders allow security screenings to be completed more quickly, reducing wait times and helping students get to class sooner.
Student safety: Limiting large bookbags helps reduce the possibility of prohibited items being brought onto campus, including excessive sweet and salty snacks, tobacco products, weapons, and other items that are not permitted at school.
Academic focus: Students are encouraged to bring only the materials they need for learning, helping them stay organized and prepared throughout the day.
Please note that female students may continue to carry Montgomery Public Schools regulation-size purses for personal items. These purses are intended for personal necessities and are not a substitute for carrying school supplies.
I also want to acknowledge the timing of this communication. Having just assumed the role of principal earlier this month, I recognize that this request may create an inconvenience for some families, and I sincerely apologize for the late notice. My first responsibility is to ensure that every decision we make places our students' safety and academic success at the center. I respectfully ask for your partnership and understanding as we implement this expectation.
If the timing of this information creates a hardship for your family, please do not hesitate to contact me directly. I understand that some families may have already purchased school supplies, and I am committed to working with you to help make this transition as smooth as possible. You may email me at victor.davis@mps.k12.al.us, and I will do my best to assist you.
Your support will help us create a safer campus, streamline our morning arrival procedures, and maximize instructional time so that students can focus on what matters most—learning.
Thank you for your patience, cooperation, and continued commitment to Brewbaker Middle School. Together, we can provide our students with a safe, orderly, and successful school year.
Warm regards,
Victor Davis
