Special Education Department

Special education services are provided in two different settings here at Wilson Elementary.  Students are provided with specialized instruction based on their specific needs. At Wilson, we provide a collaborative/co-taught setting and self-contained language units. In the collaborative setting, the general education teacher provides curriculum expertise within the grade-level content area, and a special education teacher serves as an intervention specialist providing alternate methods of instruction in order to meet varied student learning needs. The Language Units provide specially designed instruction for specific students who have language deficits which impede the student’s ability to be successful in the general education environment independently. The majority of these students receive instruction aligned with the Alabama Alternate Achievement Standards. Instruction is individualized for each student. Students in both settings have access to a sensory room and MakerSpace to promote mental and physical calmness which in turn increases their concentration. The Language Unit focuses on building communication skills in order to help students be successful.
