Probably no public school in Montgomery is so identified with the educational heritage of this area as is Flowers Elementary School.  Erected in 1960, the school is named for James Drury Flowers whose family actively participated in educational and religious endeavors for over 200 years.  Great-grandfather Flowers, also named James Drury, was an intrepid Methodist circuit rider through the Carolinas, and had the distinction of being ordained by the venerable Bishop Francis Asbury.   

James Drury Flowers’s father operated a thriving wholesale lumber business, from which he derived considerable financial success.  Money, however, served its greatest usefulness to the family when it was invested in the lives of young people having no possible way to advance educationally.  He also was responsible for Huntingdon College being relocated in Montgomery by contributing $50, 000.  Flowers Hall is named for him.

James Drury Flowers followed the family tradition.  He filled a prominent religious and civic position in the city’s life and served for 21 years on the County Board of Education.
