Annual salaries for teaching positions are based on certificates and degrees held as well as years of experience in the profession.

    Applicants who have prior full-time teaching experience in a public school system or in a public college and/or university will be given credit for such experience. In these cases, the starting salaries cited above will be increased.


    All regular eligible employees are granted five (5) personal leave days per year, which may be taken at any time. Personal leave does not accumulate from year-to-year. The first two days are provided at no cost to the employee and are earned at a rate of one day per semester. Each of the remaining three days (when used) will result in the employee's gross pay being reduced by the daily rate of a substitute teacher.


    Sick leave is earned at the rate of one day per month while in a pay status. Sick leave accumulates from year-to-year. Any unused sick leave balance at retirement is credited toward years of service. Beneficiaries of active duty employees who die while in service are paid for unused sick leave up to 225 days.


    The Montgomery Public School System is a member of the Alabama Teacher's Retirement System. Membership is mandatory for all full-time employees. If you were hired before January 1, 2013, you are classified as a TRS Tier 1 member. If you were hired after January 1, 2013, and do not have prior service years with RSA, you are classified as a TRS Tier 2 Member.     Full-time employees are eligible to participate in the Public Education Employees Health Insurance Program (PEEHP). Several plans are available. Current employee cost for individual health insurance plan is $15.00 per month, and family coverage starts at $177.00 per month. Two types of hospital/medical plans are available: Basic Family (Preferred Provider) and Health Maintenance Organization (HMO). Other supplemental plans are also available.     A group life insurance policy in the amount of $10,000.00 is provided free of charge by the Board of Education for full-time employees. In addition, the Alabama Teacher's Retirement System provides a benefit of one year's salary upon the death of a currently full-time employee.
