This Just In… for the Week of March 22 - 26, 2010
The Montgomery Association of Area Realtors donated over 50 containers of laundry detergent to the Children’s Center.
Congratulations go to third grade students at Blount Elementary for their successful community spirit project. Students adopted Family Promise of Montgomery, which provides food, shelter, and support services for homeless families. They also educate people about poverty and the ways to combat it. Third graders loaded eight plastic bins full of school supplies, books, games, and other educational materials. They also brought in several pieces of luggage and toys for the families to use when they are moving from church to church. Blount families also donated 35 coats to aid families during cold weather.
T. S. Morris Elementary students participated in a Chess Competition at Frazer Memorial United Methodist Church. Jada Pickett won first place in the fifth and sixth grade level; Arianna Armstrong won first place in the third and fourth grade level; and Danajah Scott won second place in the third and fourth grade level. In addition, the karate class participated in the 14th annual Ryuken Classic Karate Tournament. The following students placed in the tournament. They are: First place winners, Christopher Brown, Ronnie Turner, and Oliver Cardenas; Second place winners, Samuel Reeves, Oliver Cardenas, Justin Pate, and Ajay Nathan; Third place winners, Oliver Cardenas, Marion Carney, David Williams, Kristina Pettus, Justin Lewis, Ajay Nathan, and Cameron Pierce; and Fourth place winners, Samuel Reeves, Ronnie Turner, Jawaski Wingard, Marion Carney, and Cameron Pierce.
Kudos go to the following Wilson Elementary teachers who achieved recognition through Renaissance Learning: Tesa Shaw, second grade, Model and Master Classroom; Melissa Cleondis, first grade, Master classroom; Becky Lollar, first grade, Model Classroom; Whitney Trotman, second grade, Master Classroom; Johnetta Lewis, second grade, Model Classroom; and Lindsey Russell, kindergarten, Master Classroom. Also, the Student Government Association collected $1,169 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association by selling shamrocks. The fourth grade won a party for selling the most shamrocks.
Congratulations go to Catoma Elementary teacher Jenny McKenzie for reaching Master Teacher through Renaissance Learning, and Kim Foley, for earning Model Classroom.
Congratulations go to Booker T. Washington Magnet High student Christian Hillery who received a combined $36,000 in academic and music scholarships to the University of Mobile. Kudos go to Sarah Hitchner, who danced in the Alabama Dance Theatre production of “Peter Pan” and played Wendy. In addition, Mi Lan Yang, Hyunwoo Cho, and Jeong Woo Kho, played in the Montgomery Symphony Children’s Concert.
Sign up for Montgomery Clean City Commission’s annual Great American Cleanup Program to be held March 1 – May 31. The cleanup program in partnership with Keep America Beautiful, Inc., the State of Alabama, national sponsors and state and local sponsors, is a fun, educational, outdoor activity. This spring, you can help with local cleanup, beautification and community improvement. To register, contact the Montgomery Clean City commission at 241-2175.
Over 300 prom dresses were collected this year for students during the United Way’s 2010 Prom Dress Drive. All dresses were donated from the River Region community and cleaned by Jim Massey Cleaners. Other partners of the event include Hot 105.7, WAKA, and Montgomery’s CW.
