Schools and How to Enroll
Magnet
MPS students attend either magnet or traditional schools. Magnet schools are open to students that meet the basic criteria and are picked by lottery. The application period for magnet schools is generally open beginning in early January for the following school year. The application period lasts approximately one month. Applicants do not have to live in the MPS district when they apply, but they have to be in residence before the first day of school -- early in August. Magnet school students can live anywhere in the MPS attendance zone. We do not enroll students who live outside the attendance zone. Find out more about magnet schools here.
Traditional
Students are assigned to traditional schools based on their address. Once you know your address, you can click here to use our Zone Tool to see where your children will attend school. (Please note - we may have some changes in zones for the 2019-2020 school year. Any changes will be posted as soon as possible.)
To see a list of schools, use the "Schools" pull-down menu above.
Students usually can enroll online. This includes uploading most documentation that is needed. Click Here for information on enrolling in an MPS traditional school.
Special Needs Programs
MPS offers a wide variety of services to students with special needs. Click Here to find out more about the programs and options for children and families.
Before and After School Care
Some MPS schools offer before and/or after school care through a partnership with the YMCA. At other schools, local daycare businesses offer pickup and drop off before and after school. The staff at your child's school will be happy to provide you with the information on their programs.
Advanced Placement Courses
AP and Pre-AP courses are offered in MPS middle and high schools, in both traditional and magnet. Courses vary from school to school. Your school's counselor can provide more information on courses as you register.
Meals
Every student has access to breakfast, lunch and often a snack at no charge, regardless of their family's income. Some schools serve a supper as part of their after-school programs. You can find out more here.
Transportation
MPS operates over 200 school buses each day. If you live more than 2.5 miles away from your school, bus transportation is provided. Click Here for more information.
Sports
MPS offers a variety of organized sports teams for students. Traditional schools generally have more offerings than magnets. Check the website for your zoned school for details on what sports are offered.
Arts
We understand the importance of arts and offer a number of programs in both magnet and traditional schools. Music, art, dance and theater classes are available. The class offerings vary from school to school. Your child's counselor will assist you with specifics when registering for classes.
Clubs and Extracurricular Events
Our schools provide growth opportunities for students with clubs and extracurricular instruction with activities ranging from robotics to chess and many others. Check with your child's school to see what they specifically offer.
