Elementary Magnet Program Admission Requirements
Bear Exploration Center Admission Requirements: Acceptance into Bear Exploration Center is based upon strong interest in mathematics, science and technology, and satisfactory attendance. Kindergarten and first grade applicants must successfully complete an entrance interview/examination. Second through fifth grade eligibility is based upon a grade point average of 2.75, an entrance examination, and satisfactory conduct and attendance records. To remain in the program, students must maintain a core academic average of 2.5 or better and satisfactory conduct and attendance records.
Carver Elementary Arts Admission Requirements: Acceptance into Carver Elementary Arts Magnet school is based upon strong interest in the arts: classical guitar, instrumental music, strings, piano, choral music, dance, drama, and visual art. Kindergarten and first grade applicants must successfully complete an entrance interview/examination. Second through fifth grade eligibility is based upon a 2.5 grade point average, an entrance examination, a satisfactory conduct and attendance record, and the successful completion of an audition in one arts area. To remain in the program, students must maintain a core academic average of 2.5 or better and satisfactory conduct and attendance records.
Forest Avenue Academic Requirements: Acceptance into Forest Avenue Academic Magnet is based upon an academic record that indicates strong motivation, high achievement and the aptitude to perform at a grade level above the grade in which the student is enrolled. Kindergarten and first grade eligibility is based upon successful completion of an entrance interview/examination. Second through fifth grade eligibility is based upon a 3.5 grade point average, an entrance examination and a satisfactory conduct and attendance record. To remain in the program, students must maintain a core academic average of 3.0 or better and satisfactory conduct and attendance records.
MacMillan International Academy Requirements: Acceptance into MacMillan International Academy is based upon strong interest in international studies, humanities, communications and technology, as well as an enthusiasm for learning. Kindergarten and first grade applicants must successfully complete an entrance interview/examination. Second through fifth grade eligibility is based upon a 3.0 grade point average, an entrance examination, and satisfactory conduct and attendance records. To remain in the program, students must maintain a core academic average of 2.75 or better and satisfactory conduct and attendance records.
Applications for Elementary Magnet Programs
Applications for winter magnet period will be available for elementary students in January 2014 and are available at the magnet schools, Central Office, and online at www.mps.k12.al.us. Applicants should select a first and second choice school on the application. Only one application should be submitted per year, and only one elementary application per student will be accepted. Second choice selections will not be considered until all first-choice applications have been exhausted.
Applicants for kindergarten magnet programs must have had their fifth birthday, and first grade applicants must have had their sixth birthday by September 2, 2013. The completed elementary application must be returned to the appropriate school by the stated deadline.
Montgomery County students not currently enrolled in a magnet program must complete an application. Students who want to transfer from one magnet to another must complete a new application. Students who leave the magnet program during the school year will be reassigned to their zoned school. A student who is accepted from a school not accredited by a state department of education or a regional accrediting agency will be accepted provisionally. If a provisional student is accepted and is unable to progress at the academic level required, the student will be reassigned to his/her zoned school.
Transcript Information/Grade Eligibility
An official transcript is required to determine eligibility for acceptance to the magnet programs. The Transcript Request Form must be completed and given to the principal or counselor at the school the student currently attends. If a student’s transcript is not from a Montgomery Public School, the sending school should provide an official explanation of grade equivalences.
For applicants to Bear Exploration Center, Carver Elementary Arts, Forest Avenue Academic Magnet and MacMillan International who are entering grades 2-5, an official transcript for the previous school year (2012-2013) and the first semester of the current school year (2013-2014) must be mailed directly to the magnet school by the school the student currently attends. The transcript must be on file at the magnet school no later than 4:30 p.m. on the stated deadline. A transcript is not considered official unless it is provided directly to the magnet school from the sending school.
A student accepted into a magnet school that requires a minimum grade point average and other criteria must maintain the specified grade point average, conduct record and attendance requirements during the second semester of the current school year (2013-2014) to remain eligible. Failure to do so will result in loss of eligibility.
Program Acceptance
Letters will be mailed to Bear, Carver, Forest Avenue and MacMillan applicants notifying them of their status . Parents should return acceptance letters to Bear, Carver, Forest Avenue, and MacMillan by the deadline indicated.
Procedures for Homeschoolers
Homeschool applicants will be evaluated individually based on the official documents that are submitted with the magnet school application. Homeschool applicants must meet the Alabama State Department of Education’s guidelines for homeschooling.
Transportation
Transportation to the magnet schools will be available to eligible students only from their zoned schools and back to their zoned schools. Parents will be responsible for transporting their child to and from the zoned school. Students who live within 2.5 miles of the magnet school they attend are not eligible for transportation, except for Baldwin and Loveless students. All transportation decisions, bus schedules and bus assignments are made by the Transportation Office. Middle School Magnet Program Admission Requirements
Baldwin Academics Magnet Requirements: Baldwin Arts and Academics Magnet offers two programs: accelerated academics and arts. The academics magnet offers middle school students accelerated classes infused with technology, research experiences and a range of activities designed to complement classroom instruction. Acceptance into Baldwin Academics is based upon an overall 3.5 grade point average for the past three semesters in core subjects, and satisfactory conduct and attendance records. To remain in the program, students must maintain an academic average of 3.0 or better in the core subjects and maintain satisfactory conduct and attendance.
Baldwin Arts Magnet offers middle school students an academic program infused with the arts. Acceptance into Baldwin Arts is based upon a 2.75 grade point average for the past three semesters in core subjects, satisfactory conduct and attendance records, and the successful completion of an audition in two arts areas. To remain in the program, students must maintain an academic average of 2.75 or better in the core subjects, a 3.0 or better in each arts area, and satisfactory conduct and attendance.
Carr Academic Magnet Program Requirements: Carr Academic Magnet Program provides an academic program that focuses on project-based learning. Students are challenged in the areas of math and science one year above their current grade level. Acceptance to Carr’s Academic Magnet Program is based upon an overall 3.5 grade point average for the past three semesters in core subjects, and satisfactory conduct and attendance records. To remain in the program, students must maintain an academic average of 3.0 or better in the core subjects and maintain satisfactory conduct and attendance.
Floyd Middle Magnet Requirements: Floyd Middle Magnet offers academic learning opportunities with an emphasis in the areas of mathematics and science through state-of-the-art technology. Acceptance into Floyd Middle Magnet is based upon a 2.75 grade point average for the past three semesters in core subjects, and satisfactory conduct and attendance records. To remain in the program, students must maintain an academic average of 2.5 or better in the core subjects, pass all elective classes, and maintain satisfactory conduct and attendance.

Athletics Policy
A student, who meets all other AHSAA eligibility requirements and is accepted to Baldwin Arts and Academic Magnet Johnnie Carr Middle Magnet, or Floyd Middle Magnet, is eligible to participate in sports at their zoned middle school. A student may also “play up” at one of the three magnet high schools (Loveless, Brew Tech or BTW). However, if a student chooses to “play up”, they have established their eligibility at the school for which they are playing. If the student chooses not to enroll in the school for which they are playing or if the student is not selected to that particular school through the magnet application process, the student will be ineligible to play at their zoned traditional school or another MPS magnet high school for a period of one year from the date of enrollment.
Transportation
Transportation to the magnet schools will be available to eligible students only from their zoned schools and back to their zoned schools. Parents will be responsible for transporting their child to and from the zoned school. Students who live within 2.5 miles of the magnet school they attend are not eligible for transportation, except for Baldwin students. Baldwin parents must take their children to the zoned school in the morning. In the afternoon, students are transported from Baldwin to their zoned school where they connect with their neighborhood bus and are transported home. High School Magnet Program Admission Requirements
Booker T. Washington Magnet Requirements: Booker T. Washington Magnet has four magnet areas: Creative and Performing Arts Center (CPAC), Academy for Communication Arts (ACA), Center for Advanced Technology (CAT), and the Center for Law. Acceptance into Booker T. Washington is based on a student’s talent or interest in at least one of the four magnet areas, the successful completion of a placement interview/ audition, and a grade point average of 2.75 or better in the core academic areas (math, science, history, and English), and satisfactory conduct and attendance. To remain in the program, students must maintain an academic average of 2.5 or better in the core subjects, a 3.0 or better in their magnet, and satisfactory conduct and attendance.
Brewbaker Technology Magnet Requirements: Brewbaker Technology Magnet High has eight career academy magnet areas: Architecture, Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Building Sciences, Commerce and Technology, Graphic Design, Information Technology, and Medical Academy. Acceptance into Brewbaker Technology is based on a student’s talent or interest in at least one of the six magnet areas, a grade point average of 2.75 or better in the core academic areas (math, science, history and English), and satisfactory conduct and attendance. To remain in the program, students must maintain an academic average of 2.5 or better in the core subjects, a 3.0 or better in each academy area, and satisfactory conduct and attendance.
Loveless Academic Magnet Program Requirements: Loveless Academic Magnet Program High offers a stringent college preparatory curriculum that prepares students who are interested in pursuing careers in professional areas for admission to the most prestigious colleges and universities in the nation. Acceptance into Loveless is based upon an interview, an academic record indicating demonstrated ability to complete higher-level academic coursework, a grade point average of 3.0 or better, and satisfactory conduct and attendance. To remain in the program, students must maintain a weighted academic average of 2.5 or better in core academic courses (math, science, history, English and foreign language) and satisfactory conduct and attendance.

A student, who “played up” at a MPS magnet high school while enrolled at Baldwin Arts and Academic Magnet or Floyd Middle Magnet and is attempting to enroll at a different school from where his/her high school eligibility is established, is ineligible for a period of one year from the date of enrollment.
